5 out of 5 stars A fantastic all-natural and ethically-produced soap from everyone's favorite rabbi-chemist   September 3, 2010
buru buru piggu (New York, NY USA)
This review is for the 18-in-1 Hemp Peppermint 16 oz soap. The dropdown for all the different scents and sizes is quite a nightmare, but the hemp peppermint one is 5th from the bottom of the list.

I've been using Dr. Bronner's soaps for many years now and love his products. Many people know this brand from the eccentric writing that covers the entire surface of the bottle, espousing the late rabbi-chemist's philosophy and spiritual views (on the unity of mankind: "We're All-One, or none"). It wraps around the label, some of it's written vertically, some in very tiny print. It's idiosyncratic to say the least and gives me something to read while I'm in the shower.

But aside from that, it's just a fantastic soap and you can feel good about supporting a company that believes in doing right by the world. It's 100% natural, biodegradable, not tested on animals, supports Fair Trade, ingredients are certified organic, and the bottle is made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic. It is type 1 PETE plastic, so it is accepted by municipal recycling collection. The bottle even encourages you to conserve by refilling from gallon jugs or drums at the store.

The soap works into a very rich lather and smells very nice. It smells like peppermint candy and rinses off cleanly, without a filmy, slippery feeling many liquid soaps leave. I keep a bottle of it in my gym bag. I cannot recommend this soap more. It's simply fantastic.

3 out of 5 stars Bronner's Liquid Peppermint Soap   September 3, 2010

I read the great reviews and although I agree that the soap smells really nice, it was quite a thin liquid. I wanted to make some foaming hand wash with it, but I had to add some really thick body wash to make it not squirt out and all over the place. When I added water and shook it, the mixture for the foaming hand soap pump turned an opaque white.

Overall, the soap reminds me of diluted soapy Pine-Sol. The price is a bit high for what you get, but because I love the smell I think I will just buy some peppermint oil next time.

Positives: The soap was not irritating to my skin and left my hands soft and smooth. I have sensitive skin. It did not tingle or feel like menthol shaving cream or anything, but I used just a tiny bit to wash my hands. Overall I like it, but I feel that the price is double what I actually think it's worth to me.

I haven't tried this peppermint soap in the shower yet. I'll update later if it's really much better in the shower than as hand washing soap. Note that this soap does not appear to be super-concentrated. It is about as thin as the foaming hand soap refill liquid.

2 out of 5 stars Unpleasantly Surprised   August 17, 2010

I researched the hell out of Dr. Bronner's when I wanted a more natural shampoo/soap, and it received nothing but positive responses - so I bought it in Peppermint. The smell is lovely, but it DOES NOT wash my hair, though it is advertised as an 18-in-1 magic soap - shampoo included.

Let me preface by saying I have VERY thick hair.

The first time I noticed that it wasn't clean was while I was camping. After a shower, the back of my hair felt wet and heavy for WAY too long, so I checked it out in the bathroom, and it looked like my hair was greasy and filled with residue. At first I dismissed it based on the water pressure from camping.

When I returned home, I used Dr. Bronner's on my hair two days in a row, taking special care to make sure my hair was completely rinsed. By the second day, my hair was gnarly and matted in the back.

Unfortunately, even using this as a body wash makes my skin feel tight.
I REALLY wanted to like this shampoo. I was hoping it would change my life.

5 out of 5 stars Best product ever   July 18, 2010

I have heard a lot about this soap, and finally I broke down and got a bottle of the peppermint. It is amazing stuff.

**Completely organic

**Smells amazing, but strong even when diluted. It goes away pretty quickly though.

**Fantastic for sensitive skin. I used to be able to use whatever I wanted, but thanks to immune system problems, I had to switch to completely natural/organic body and household products. Especially with how hot this summer has been, the peppermint makes for a totally refreshing shower or quick hand/face cooling wash.

**Safe for color treated hair since it doesn't have any sulfates which is what fades color. You do need to use conditioner though if you use this for shampoo.

**Great for pets too. I checked with a couple of vets and all three agreed this was a very safe wash, especially since it contains no funky chemicals. And yes, whatever scent used fades pretty quickly, though a minty or lavender scented dog is much preferable to one that just rolled in a dead rabbit. Trust me on this one....

**It is super concentrated. Since it can be diluted one part soap to 40 parts water, a bottle can last months. For heavier, dirtier jobs, I add a bit more soap. Best part? No filmy residue that makes me have to go back and rinse mop the floor several times. A really welcome change for me from most commercial and some natural products.

**Works well in my HE washing machine since it's low sudsing.

**I haven't used it for some of the other uses like tooth brushing, but I imagine it would work well for that, too.

Yep, I am pretty pleased with this soap. It's hard to find a product nowadays that really does live up to it's promises. It may not work for everyone, but I really recommend getting the smallest bottle just to try it out. One of it's 18 uses is bound to work for you.

4 out of 5 stars ROSE   July 6, 2010

This review is about the Rose scent

The soap itself is great, but to me the rose scent does not smell like roses. It might as well be called Flowers. I was hoping it would smell like rose water, but it is not distinctive. Wish I had know that before I ordered.
